The contrast between the river and the land is another central theme that holds great significance. The Mississippi River becomes a symbol of freedom and escape. On the raft, Huck and Jim are liberated from the constraints of a society filled with racism, hypocrisy, and false piety. In contrast, the towns along the river represent the darkness of civilization. The feuds, the con artists, and the rigid social hierarchies all highlight the flaws within human - made structures.
