Review of Chapter 1 of Wuthering Heights
The first chapter of Wuthering Heights sets a tone of isolation and tension that foreshadows the novel's dark themes. Through the eyes of Mr. Lockwood, a newcomer to the area, we are introduced to the mysterious Mr. Heathcliff and the desolate setting of Wuthering Heights. The narrative begins in 1801, with Lockwood visiting his landlord, Heathcliff, in a remote part of England. The setting is described as a "beautiful country" but also as a place "completely removed from the stir of society," which Lockwood ironically calls a "perfect misanthropist’s heaven." This duality reflects the novel's exploration of beauty and brutality, solitude and connection.
Lockwood’s initial impressions of Heathcliff are both humorous and unsettling. He describes Heathcliff as a "capital fellow" despite the latter’s cold and suspicious demeanor. Heathcliff’s black eyes "withdraw so suspiciously under their brows" and his fingers "sheltered themselves" in his waistcoat when Lockwood announces his name, suggesting a deep-seated mistrust and hostility. These physical details hint at Heathcliff’s complex character—someone who is both intriguing and dangerous.
The interaction between Lockwood and Heathcliff is marked by awkwardness and miscommunication. Lockwood’s polite introduction, in which he identifies himself as the new tenant of Thrushcross Grange, is met with only a "nod" from Heathcliff. This minimal response underscores the emotional distance between the characters and the inhospitable nature of the environment. Lockwood’s attempt to ingratiate himself—by mentioning his prompt visit and expressing concern about any inconvenience—further highlights the clash between his social manners and Heathcliff’s reclusive, unfriendly nature.
Overall, Chapter 1 effectively establishes the novel’s atmosphere of mystery and conflict. Brontë uses vivid descriptions and ironic humor to introduce key themes of isolation, alienation, and the tension between civilization and wildness. The chapter’s focus on the strained relationship between Lockwood and Heathcliff sets the stage for the complex character dynamics and dramatic events that follow.
