The Merchant of Venice, one of William Shakespeare’s most classic
comedies, explores profound themes of mercy, prejudice, justice and
human nature through a story of debt and revenge. The play revolves
around Antonio, a merchant who borrows money from Jewish moneylender
Shylock to help his friend Bassanio. Shylock sets a cruel condition: a
pound of Antonio’s flesh if the debt is unpaid. The climax comes in the
courtroom, where Portia, disguised as a lawyer, defends Antonio with a
clever interpretation of the law, emphasizing mercy over rigid justice.
Shylock is not a simple villain. He is a victim of long-term racial and
religious discrimination, whose pain and anger reveal the dark side of
the Venetian society. Portia, with her wisdom and courage, breaks the
stereotype of women in that era. Beyond its comedic plot, the play
makes readers think about the meaning of true justice and the harm of
prejudice. It remains a meaningful work that still inspires reflection
on humanity and equality today.
