The Great Gatsby
The novel describes the story about Gatsby and his pursuits for the "American dreams",which promulgated the American society's tragedy.
During the World War One,as a poor soldier,Gatsby fell in love with an upper-class girl named Daisy. However, due to the huge gap between them,Daisy decided to marry Tom,a man who was superordinate. Realizing that,Gatsby was broken-hearted. He was strongly convinced that money was more important than anything else. He then lost himself in pursuing the so-called "American dreams",imagining that Daisy would come back to him when he had lots of treasure. Nevertheless,he was thoroughly wrong. After five years' striving,he became a millionaire and he bought a palatial villa near Daisy's to attract her attention. Unfortunately,he was too addicted to his fantasy to realize that Daisy was no longer the lovely girl she used to be,instead, she was a greedy vanity indeed. Later he was in custody because of the crime he committed. The poor Gatsby was killed at the end of the story.
After reading this book,I thought a lot. Not only in those decades, but also in our era, phenomenon is quite similar. Generally, there are two circumstances underlying it. The first one is the lack of dreams. Those people who had a lot of wealth buried themselves into a great number of parties, wasting their time. They are aimless, nondirectional and all those parties they held are meaningless. Another one is the over-pursuitting dream. Sometimes they are too indulged in wealth, status and those peacockish things to remember the initial destination they once thought.
It's quite sorry that a lot of people lost their way. I hope each one of you can stick to your own goals and struggle for it unswervingly.
