Introduction:
The book called"The Call Of The Wild"is a adventure novel set in Yukon,Canada ,during the 1890s Gold Rush,which is published in 1903.It is wrote by Jack London,an famous American writer.This story is developed in chronological order.At first,Buck lived peacefully,finally became wild.The call of the wild he heard was through the whole passage,which is also the clue of the story.
Jack London spent about one year to collect the material in Yukon.At first,it came out as story and a month later in book form.The book became good popularity and reputation.In 1923,this book was adapted to a film,soon became cinematic.
In this book,John London put emphasis on the struggle of Buck to show the tale of survival.The author described a dog named Buck who used to live in the civilization.Later,he was sold by a servant of his master,so he became a sled dog.He learned to be harsh and beast just as the wolves and the wild dogs ,and finally came back to the wild because of the cruel reality.The Gold Rush in 20 century revealed the greed,selfishness,and big appetite of people,On the contrary,Buck is full of dignity,beauty,and loyalty,which became a big comparison and satire.
However,from another perspective,he used the struggle of the dog to analogy the human beings in 19th century.People lived tragically.They could not hold theirs fates,they only wish to be living. They were incapable to fight against the fate.
Summary of Content:
To the north
The story opens with a dog named Buck,who lived happily in a valley.He was a clever and kind dog with shining hair later sold by a servant of his master to the gambling addiction,he trust every people,so that he even did not realize he was sold at the beginning.Then his new master who was in a red sweater took him with five dogs to the cold,far north Canada.People that time were always in the Gold Fever.Buck was not adapted to the totally different circumstance at first.But latter he realized the reality and began to change.
The law of the club and tooth
Put in a crate, he was unfed and ill-treated.he learned about the law of club and tooth and how to be a competent dog.There was no rest no peace,only continual noise and movement.The dogs and men only know the law of the club and tooth.He learned quick living,how to eat any food and was adapted to the north.He became a outstanding sled dog.Buck had to work day and night or he would be treated with club.In fact, I think the club in the passage is not only the symbol of a tool,but also cruel capitalist country.Here used metaphor.
The wild animal
The wild animal was strong in Buck.Spitz always show his teeth to Buck.It was one day with heavy snow and cold,the lake was frozen,the conflict finally began.At this time,they saw eighty or hundred dogs coming.Even they are all skin and bone,hunger made them fight like wild things.They worn out,and lost half of their foods.Time passed away,the chance had come.Buck knew ,he or Spitz,one of them must die.Spitz was intelligent,he know how to avoid Buck’s attack.Several times later,Buck was covered in blood.The time at the last turn,he jumped ,bite Spitz’s left front leg.Spitz disappeared in the dogs.He had made its kill .
The new lead-dog
Spitz disappeared and Buck wanted to be the lead- dog.Though he beat Spitz, his masters still thought he was new here and inexperienced.Buck stood in the lead dog’s position.For them,who became the lead-dog didn’t matter.Buck was a great leader.He reacted quickly and manage others well.Under his power,dogs were incapable of being lazy or fighting.He was bound to be a lead-dog because he was so unique.In Skagway,it was the last time Buck saw his last masters-Francois and Perrault.They sold Buck and other dogs,the new master recognized Buck was a distinguished dog,so he cost 1000 dollars to buy him.They went on the long journey to Dawson again.They worked day and night without enough food.Every dog includes Buck got weaker and weaker,some even died.But he had to work harder, because the moment he was useless,there would be a gun shot at him. How cruel the reality was.
More hard work
The new masters were young,they put too much luggage on the sledge that out of burden.Dogs tried their best but the sledge did not move at all.And the new master always picked up his whip to hurry them up.More dogs died,when the spring came.That came into a strong comparison between the miserable fate of the dogs and the warm weather.Life was so hard and they really need a long rest.
For the love of a man
The man who was with a whip dropped in the lake and disappeared.The spring had come.He was almost well.He enjoyed a peaceful time with his master Thornton.He treated animal in a kind way.Buck began to love him.Though in the pass,Buck had a good time in the valley,but he never loved Mr Miller.He loved Thornton because he saved his life,he always touch him,spoke to him.They spent a happy time together.Thornton treated him as his child.Buck felt dignified.However,something was changing in Buck.He had lived in north for a long time,and now he was wild.He love to sit at Thornton’s fire,but he sat like a wild dog,and he often dreamed of wild wolves.”They seemed to call him in the forest.Buck wanted to leave the fire but every time he went into the trees,his love for Thornton called him back.”Buck loved Thornton,only Thornton.
The call of the wild
In the autumn,Buck came to a strange place.The spring came again.They found a lake in a wide valley.The water was yellow just like the shining gold.Yes, they found the gold,a huge number of gold.They finished the search.From then on,Buck had nothing to do.One night he sat there,he heard the strange call again.Following the sound,he saw a wolf sitting there,pointing the nose to the sky.They run together for several hours,with other wolves,just like what he used to dream about.But every time,he stopped because of the love for Thornton.One day, he back to the camp,he knew something bad happened,he saw Hans body,and then saw some Indians,they were dancing around the fire.He jumped at the first man and tore out his throat,the man was killed immediately.Then the second,the third.No one could stop him.He guessed that maybe Thornton was under the river.He stood by the river stably.At the end ,he heard the call of the wild again.Then,he went into the forest ,just look back once,and left us a permanent back for us.
Summary of the book
Jack London writes this story in a simple way.Simple but descriptive.From the dog---Buck’s perspective,we see a human society,which is full of selfishness and greed.People are crazy for chasing after the Gold Fever.He used “intelligent,excellent,and good”to describe Buck.This article is easy to read,but behind the words,I can understand some profound argumentation.One is that no matter when or where we are,we should keep our principle.Never lose ourselves.
The author also sets a clue that goes through the story,which is also the title--The Call of the Wild.At the beginning,Buck becomes a sledge dog ,sometimes he will hear the call of the wild,but only by accident.With the wild animal getting stronger and stronger,he hears the call of the wild,from the forest ,more and more frequently.
Besides,as for the organizational method,he uses metaphor and symbolism.In fact,Buck stands for the human beings.His intelligence,kindness,honor,dignity and his love for Thornton are also the emotion that human have. And the conflict between Buck and Thornton symbolizes the law in human society,selecting the superior and eliminating the inferior.The war between Buck and Spitz is inevitably
To tell the truth,I love this book.I spent a whole Sunday reading it continuously.There are reasons as follows.First,it is quite easy to read.The words are basic and the author states the story shapely,chronically.And he leaves a clue,the call of the wild,to make it better understand for readers.Second,the protagonist,Buck,is brave and he has many qualities that I admired.Even facing with cruel reality,we should try our best to live,never giving up our faith.If you think life is hard and always unsatisfying,we should keep up.
