Interesting in Both—a Book Rev
He is one of the best known detectives in the world; he is one of the most intelligent men that I have ever known; he is one of the determined men to fight against the criminal gangs. He is also one of my heroes, and his name is Sherlock Holmes. Perhaps we get familiar with him due to the movies or the TV series and seldom read the books. I was pleased when I found I had access to the book as I had just read about the Chinese translation before. As an enthusiastic fan of detective fiction, I would not let this chance slip out of my finger.
After reading this book, I find that its popularity may because not only the complex plots the unexpected ending and the marvelous detective abilities, but also the impressive writing. Firstly, there are many similes and metaphors. For instance, Conan Doyle wrote that:”He…like a spider in the centre of its web”. I believe it can vividly describe that Professor Moriarty controlled a large group of crime and he was able to know everything happened in London. The spider, a kind of disgusting insect for the majority of people, represents the death and devil sometimes. The author compared Professor Moriarty to a spider to show the real character of him. Conan also used metaphors:”He is the Napoleon of crime”, to tell the readers that the Moriarty is the king of the crimes. When the king of laws encounters the king of crimes, we can predict that the final showdown is on its way. Secondly, the parallelism can also be seen in the book. Sherlock regards Moriarty as” a genius, a philosopher, an abstract thinker”. The paratactic nouns are powerful and can make the readers feel strong feelings. Thirdly, repeated words, another way of revealing the strong feelings, is used in the conversation:”You hope to place me in the dock. I tell you that I never stand in the dock. You hope to beat me. I tell you that you will never beat me.” The sentences show the great confidence of Professor Moriarty and his defiant tone. These can raise the readers’ hatred towards Moriarty and the evil gang he represents. Last but not the least, there are also some descriptions of the situations. When Watson comes to the falls, the description of the surroundings tries it best to make the scary and frightening atmosphere. It may predict the death of Sherlock.
I was just addicted to the problems and the unexpected murderer before I read the English version. The mysterious cases, the cruel murderers and the intelligent detectives will always make me spellbound. I enjoy the books and try to help the detectives to solve the cases. After finishing the English one, I change my mind on the standard of a good detective novel. Maybe there are thousands of detective novels have better methods of committing crime, they might not be as famous as Sherlock Holmes because of being lacking in literariness.
It occurs to me that there is a story about this final death. It is said that Conan Doyle got tired of Sherlock Holmes as Sherlock could not fade away in the bottom of Conan’s mind. Therefore, he used the highest authority of the author to sentence Sherlock to death. Much to his surprise, his house was soon surrounded by the crazy fans of Sherlock. They did not believe the ending and shouted their demand of changing it, filling the air with anger and desire. Conan did not expect the situation, but he was so moved that he regained the strength to continue the book. The reason of this thing, I guess, is that the book is just interesting in both—literariness and plots.
