Book review for The Final Prob

This book used to be seen as the last book of the whole series Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. Although, it is coincidentally the first book about Holmes I’ve read, there was no matter for me to enjoy the amazing story and recognize new vivid ‘friends’ in this novel by reading the ‘final book’. I would like to share some reflection with you.

The novel, written by Conan Doyle, was narrated from the view of ‘Doctor Watson’, the faithful assistant of Holmes. This setting is interesting because Watson is an ordinary person, which means he is as smart as common people, like we readers. From his sight and IQ level, he couldn’t easily understand Holmes’s thought. So the readers may mostly follow what Watson thought, finding some clues strange and unexplained. By this way the author not only avoids exposing the truth too early, but also adds more suspense to the story to attract readers, offering readers large space to imagine, guess, and dig out the truth. It is a significant technique for a detective story.

As a new reader, I had no confusion in it because the author introduced them briefly and clearly in a short beginning. The technique serves both old readers and new readers. For those old supporters, it can provide extra information about the roles they care, and the similar character of those roles can offer geniality to the old readers. All this above means the book is a sequel of the books you have read before. For another, the new readers can catch the nuclear character of protagonists and the background conveniently. Consequently, they can catch up with the main story as fast as possible.

Moreover, I want to talk about the arrangement of plot. As for the background, I think it is a bit abrupt. “The Final Problem” should have described how Holmes destroyed the Moriarty’s organization. However, it just writes how Holmes got rid of Moriarty’s chase and how he “sacrificed”.  But maybe the author just wanted to comfort die-hard fans’ mind, by writing more about the friendship between Holmes and Watson. So the setting was in fact acceptable.

I enjoyed the book also because of the famous role in it. The first role that I want to analyze is Professor Moriarty. He was really a genius criminal. He could always get away from any accusation, after scheming evil crime. The “author” Watson explained his motivation to write this memoir. That was “However, by the recent letters in which Colonel James Moriarty defends the memory of his brother, and I have no choice but to lay the facts before the public exactly as they occurred”. Even after he “died”, the public couldn’t observe what he had done. They even didn’t know the real identity of Professor Moriarty. From this point we can regard Moriarty as the most extraordinary criminal. Then, in the novel, Holmes roundly introduced his horrible rival to Watson. “Napoleon of crime” could be the most proper conclusion to Moriarty. His wisdom and courage were at the same level as Holmes. The most impressive plot about Moriarty, was that he went to Baker street directly to meet Holmes. That was amazing he had such courage to stand face to face with his powerful enemy, who was eager to catch him and destroyed his evil crime empire, in his enemy’s base. Moriarty immediately realized threatens of Holmes’ weapon in his pocket. But he reminded Holmes in a gentle way. All his behavior embodied that he was a well-educated gentleman. He himself rejected violence. It was the false appearance that wonderfully covered his real identity. Then, the most expressive scene happened: Moriarty took out his note, listing the event that Holmes prevented his crime. This action can defeat ordinary people’s psychology line. He was the most powerful enemy that people dare not to challenge, except Holmes.

Holmes was the extreme smart person with undefeatable plan. The capacity of guessing other’s thought and quick reaction ensure him escape from Professor Moriarty’s conspiracy many times. And throughout his career, he was finding a chance to destroy the whole crime empire of Moriarty. In The Final Problem, he had found the chance but needed to wait until “next Monday”, so the tough challenge for him was to keep him safe. At the beginning, he was in a difficult position, but he designed a perfect path to eliminate crisis in such a short time. The most important part was, each part of his plan cannot suffer any tiny mistake. But Holmes did it accurately, by his great power of controlling every detail. Like arranging his trustworthy brother as groom, dressing as a Italian priest. The detail won extremely tiny gap for Holmes, but it could not prevent Moriarty’s chasing. The decisive action to escape from the danger, was the most unexpected tragedy. Holmes changed his way but left his luggage on the train. What a brilliant thought, even Moriarty was teased completely in this case. All these above made Holmes smarter than Moriarty. Except his wisdom, Holmes has other admirable characters, his determination in morality. He advocated justice, the greatest hope he held was let Moriarty get the punishment he deserved. He advocated fair, his IQ was higher than any other people, but he never look down on others. Instead, he use his wisdom to help those who in need. He advocated friendship, he was faithful and frank to his friend Watson. When he needed help, he trusted Watson and found him for help directly. He told Watson all the information and then Watson successfully completed his mission and kept Holmes safe. That was the power of faith and friendship. There is no doubt that the ending moved all the readers: Holmes chose to meet Moriarty alone to ensure Watson’s safety. He chose to face danger himself to protect his friend. Holmes was a real great man.

It is a classic novel which can make me review it through their mind for many times. I admire the roles in it, so I am eager to read the series Adventure of Sherlock Holmes. I strongly recommended that you can read some other books about Holmes before you open this on
