Book Review of The Final Probl

The Final Problem is narrated by Author Conan Doyle，a world famous novelist and playwright .Because of building the visualize of Sherlock Holmes ，he became one of the most important figures in the history of detective novel . Conan Doyle was educated in Edinburgh Medical University and had worked as a doctor for several years . He decided to give up the creation of The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes for it spared him too much time .Thus ,in The Final Problem ,Holmes died with Moriarty .However ,the readers weren’t satisfied with this ending .Thus ,they demanded Conan Doyle to modify the ending .Thus ,in the year of 1894, Conan Doyle wrote The Adventure of the Empty House ,in which Holmes took escape from death .

The Final Problem is the final chapter of The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes .It is third-person narration .The narrator of this book is Watson ，a friend and assistant of Holmes . By the visual angle of Watson ，the story doesn’t seem to be deliberate and dramatic and makes people feel that it truly happened in the history .

 The Final Problem was set in December , 1893 . The most important part of this story occurs in the Reichenbach Falls , Where Holmes and his deadly enemy Professor James Moriarty perished together .The story gives an account of the decisive struggle between Holmes and Moriarty .

 At the beginning of the story , Sherlock Holmes was faced with the track of Moriarty . From his words , it is obvious that he admires Moriarty for his wisdom . They are formidable adversaries of each other . They are the same in the aspect of intelligence quotient .But they stand on the opposite .Therefore ,there must be a desperate struggle .Holmes used a variety of tricks to get rid of Moriarty’s control and finally he succeeded and got the evidence to accuse Moriarty .However ,the story was not fulfilled or finished .While Watson and Holmes were seeing the view at the hamlet of Rosenlaui ,there came an English lady ,who is the helper of Moriarty .She said that there was a friend of her who had been overtaken by a sudden hemorrhage .As Watson had the medical experience and can’t refuse the request of a fellow-country woman dying in a strange land ,he decided to come back and lend a helping hand .He would never know it was the bid farewell of him and Holmes .The English lady was the helper of Moriarty ,and there wasn’t a sick woman .While Watson reached Meiringen ,he found that it was a fraud and Holmes was faced with danger .He rushed to the fall of Reichenbach but found there was none but Holmes’s Alpine-stock leaning against the rock .From the top of its boulder ,he found something bright ,which comes from the silver cigarette-case Holmes used to carry .The last words written before Holmes’s death was written on the cigarette-case .The words show what Holmes had faced after Watson went away .Holmes and Moriarty all came to an end while they were conducting a most courageous fight against each other .The two pros of their respective fields were buried in the fall of Reichenbach together .

 Most fans of The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes can’t accept this ending and force Conan Doyle to revise it .It is difficult to admit that Holmes died .And finally ,Conan Doyle compromised with them and let Holmes come back .The Final Problem is invalid.

 However ,I prefer this ending .Tragedy makes the image of Sherlock Holmes take deeper root in readers.He died a glorious death and will be always remembered by readers .This ending can give much food for thought and draw a full stop of the fight of them .Besides ,from the posthumous papers of Holmes ,we can find more flash points of him ,including the concern to Watson ,the love to his family and so on .It makes people feel grieved for his death and encouraging for the courage that he fought against evil .Holmes hasn’t died ,he lives in our heart ,and encourage us to struggle with darkness of the world .
