Carrie wanted to pursue her dream so she came to the city, but she found that not all things were going smoothly. She met many difficulties and had a hard life for a long time. Though she finally became an actress and made a lot of money which meant she no longer need a man to support her life, she still not lived happily. What she realized was still different from the dream she had at first.

  嘉莉来到城市是为了追逐自己心中的美国梦，她的性格形成与后来的职业选择，都是美国梦的驱使。但是她内心的空虚，以及为了追逐物质生活而降低了自身道德标准，实际上也反映了女性在当时男权社会中为了社会地位和物质生活而附属于他人的无奈与痛苦，实质上也是一种梦想的破灭。
