  ​Zheng He always carried tens of thousands of troops on his voyages to the West, but he never used them easily. During his 28 years of seven voyages to the West, Zheng He only sent troops overseas three times. The first of these three expeditions was to clear the Palembang area of pirates and restore stability and smooth passage of shipping. The latter two were of a self-defensive nature: a surprise attack by a king in the mountains of Ceylon and an attack by a group of rebels in Sumatra, both of which were defeated by Zheng He. The three military missions strictly followed the Yongle Emperor's general policy of peace diplomacy of good-neighborliness and "sharing peace". Zheng He's huge fleet made seven large-scale voyages without occupying an inch of other people's land, robbing them of any property, or sending a single soldier to another country. Everywhere Zheng He's fleet went, he presented local Kings, royal families, leaders and Buddhist temples with various colors of silk, porcelain, clothing, coins, gold, silver, copper and iron utensils.
