The Temple of Heaven, or the Altar of Heaven, is a complex of religious
buildings situated in the southeastern part of Beijing, China. It was
built in the early 15th century during the reign of the Yongle Emperor
of the Ming Dynasty, and served as a sacred place where emperors of the
Ming and Qing Dynasties would offer sacrifices to heaven and pray for
good harvests. The Temple of Heaven is an important cultural and
historical site in China, and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage
Site since 1998.
