  In her letter, Mrs d'Urberville offered Tess the job of keeping chickens. Alec d'Urberville whipped the horse and drove his carriage down the hill at an increasing rate of speed. Tess felt herself almost frightened. She asked him to slow down, but he ignored her. Tess shrieked, and in her fright she seized his arm. Alec d'Urberville asked Tess to put her arms around him. Tess was reluctant. He tried to kiss Tess again. Tess cried in despair. Then she deliberately let the hat blow away, she jumped down to pick up the hat and walked in the direction of Chunrui Ridge.
