Review of Gulliver's Travels
Gulliver's Travels is a travelogue written by Britain writer Jonathan Swift, which describes Gulliver's strange experience of traveling around Lilliput, Brobdingnag, Laputa, Houyhnhnms. As for such a small toy world Lilliput, everything as the royal, the politics and even the war was insignificant. Gulliver became a hero worshipped by all because let the war die down, while in Brobdingnag he need to try his best to maintain the dignity in front of giant.
But what impressed me most is when Gulliver came to Houyhnhnms where there is no cheating and lying. Compared with the real world, Gulliver did have a good time in Houyhnhnms. It was the ideal place that we all yearn for and we didn't need to worry about the truth of others' words here because everyone was genuine. And I can feel that it is the author’s critique of the reality which filled with greed, partisanship, hypocrisy, unbelief, brutality, anger, madness, resentment, envy, lust, intrigue, violence and so on.
This book just seems a mirror which lead us to rediscover history of British. It reveals the ugly humanity and chaotic society through the prosperous appearance in that period. The author implied that internal corruption and strife will destroy the country one day, and the words and behaviors of rulers will affect the whole society through these fantastic places. In addition, he also expressed his expectation: live in a country like Houyhnhnms where people can trust each other, there are no stealing, vandalism and children can grow up in safety without any annoyance.
In conclusion, Gulliver's Travels is not only an interesting novel with amusing story but also a satire showing his dissatisfaction with reality.
