It’s hard to deny that Ku Hung-Ming is a genius. He is a supermen who has a thorough knowledge of both western and traditional Chinese culture. Also, he is proficient in 9 languages and has 13 doctorate degrees.

The book which was named “The Spirit of The Chinese People” was written in full English and published in 1915. Gu asserted the dignity of Chinese culture with his own method, changed some western people’s bias of China. In addition, the book was finished in WW1, the last century, a time that European civilizations has entered into crisis. Gu’s aim is clear to be seen, he pointed  an exit for not only Europe which was in crisis but also the whole world’s culture. Another purpose is to try to explain the spirit of Chinese culture and expose its value. Although I think some ideas are a little bit extreme, just as Li Xu said, on the historical condition that nearly all of the Oriental culture were denied by a group of people, maybe only taking an extreme argument to boycott another trend of thought can get everything in true balance.

For the first three parts of this book: the spirit of the Chinese people, the Chinese woman, the Chinese language, I have some ideas of my own. Revealing in the lines is the nation pride of being a Chinese, and many spirits are truly owned by we Chinese people. Some of Mr. Gu's explanations were biased, though, it is beyond reproach that Mr. Koo has made great contribution to the promotion of Oriental civilization. The Chinese life expressed and described in this book is that Gu lived a life with the rationality of an adult but with the mind of a child. The real Chinese have adult brains and child hearts. Therefore, the Chinese spirit is the spirit of eternal youth, the national immortal spirit. What is the secret of immortality? An unspeakable refinement explains: a combination of understanding and common sense. What is the law of justice? The law of justice is truth, faithfulness and loyalty. Now in China, there is no need for natural forces to protect themselves, justice and controversy are higher than natural forces, and moral obligation is something that must be obeyed.

What is the spirit of the Chinese people? There's not an easy answer. This book explains the Chinese spirit through "the spirit of the Chinese people ", "the Chinese woman", "the Chinese language", "John Smith in China", "a great Sinologue" and "Chinese scholarship". Through many examples and comparisons, Gu deeply analyzed the spirit of Chinese. I think Chinese modesty is the most valuable and needs to be continued. Chinese spirit should "take the essence and discard the dross", and learn from the good points of others. Only in this way can the Chinese nation carry forward and never be bullied by the eight-power allied forces during their aggression against China. As a Chinese in the new era, I think we should learn from the useful parts of the book and try to be a deep, broad, simple and sensitive person.

Of course, we still need to have more in-depth discussions and studies on the Chinese spirit.
