Book Review on The Essays of Elia The Essays of Elia
was published in 1823,which is considered as one of the most
accomplished pieces of work ever created by Charles Lamb. The book
recounts the normal but colorful daily routines as well as the author’s
profound thoughts into life, which is expressed in a humorous tone and
full of his sincere feelings. The collection of the exquisite essays is
composed of six chapters, referring to six different experiences of the
writer. The story begins with the vivid and imaginative inative
description of an old china, then starts a discussion of whether it’s
superior material condition that contributes to the happiness in life or
not.In the next chapter,Mackery End in Hertordshire, the writer
introduces the housekeeper,Bridget Elia, and the experience with her of
visiting a relative. Then the writer talks about the new year eve and
extend to his personal feelings and opinions on time and life. The
chapter four, which relates his vacation on Oxfords, introduces the Oxford
university and his early experience in school. The last essay, named The
old Margate hoy, shows the writer’s bias on the coastal landscapes. The
book reflects the writer’s great temperament and interest in daliy
life.As a collection of essays,it is incredibly gripping and
successfully hod my attention. The way the writer observe and experience
the world astonish me where seemingly trivial things are blossoming in
radiant splendor and ordinary life is no more ordinary but colorful and
vibrant. On the other hand, the writer combines the discussion in depth
and minute descriptions,by which his cerebral idea can be expressed. In
conclusion, the writer tries to show us:beauty is in life,if only we can
observe;profound truth is in life,if only we think.
