Yet even as a child, she refuses to be broken—her fiery defiance when she tells Mrs. Reed, “You think I have no feelings, and that I can do without one bit of love or kindness; but I cannot live so”, reveals a strength that defines her character. This resilience carries her through the harshness of Lowood School, where she learns resilience and intellectual rigor, and later to Thornfield Hall, where she works as a governess and meets the brooding Mr. Rochester.
