Jane Eyre is a timeless classic centering on female dignity and spiritual equality. Following orphan Jane’s tough life journey, the novel breaks the old stereotype of fragile Victorian heroines.

Abused by her aunt’s family and suffering harsh deprivation at Lowood School, Jane never loses her rebellious spirit and self-respect. She firmly believes all souls are equal, regardless of wealth or status. Her iconic line to Rochester reveals her core pursuit: “I have as much soul as you—and full as much heart.” When she learns Rochester hides a mad wife, she flees Thornfield without hesitation, refusing to sacrifice her integrity for love.

Later, she turns down St. John’s cold, duty-based marriage proposal, unwilling to give up her free will. After gaining independent wealth, she returns to the disabled Rochester as an equal partner.

The book’s lasting power comes from its bold idea: love cannot exist without mutual dignity. It still encourages readers to stick to self-independence and sincere, equal affection.
